Colombo, Oct. 18 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the Government would abide by decisions delivered by the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, and would not take decisions beyond those rulings.
Addressing the Badulla District Women’s Conference today (18), the President said the law was now being applied equally to everyone, adding that those who had previously enjoyed privileges and legal protection were now protesting against the legal process.
He said Parliament enacted laws, while the Attorney General’s Department and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed cases under those laws. The Bribery Commission, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police conducted investigations, while the judiciary ultimately decided on the cases.
“The Supreme Court gives a ruling. Once a ruling is given, some start shouting, ‘No, set that aside.’ Where is the rule of law then?” he asked.
The President said a country could not function if judicial decisions were rejected whenever they did not suit certain groups.
He said the Government had entrusted the relevant institutions with the authority to enforce the law and respected the conclusions reached by the judicial system.
“We submit to the decisions given by the judiciary. Do not expect any other decisions from us beyond that,” he said.
