- Mali's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed a full suspension of entry for US nationals, citing the principle of reciprocity
- The Malian government stated that its decision was a direct response to restrictions it described as unilateral and unjustified
- A limited number of categories, including diplomats and permanent residents, were exempted from the sweeping travel ban
Mali has moved to bar United States (US) citizens from entering the country, citing reciprocity in response to what it describes as unjustified restrictions placed on Malian nationals by Washington.
The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a clarifying statement from Koulouba confirming that the suspension, which followed an initial press release dated 30 December 2025, is now fully in effect. The announcement formalises Bamako's position amid a deteriorating diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

Who is exempt from Mali's entry ban
While the ban is broad in scope, the federal government carved out specific exemptions. US citizens who hold permanent residency in Mali are permitted to continue entering the country. Nationals who already possess a valid Malian visa are also unaffected. Beyond that, certain categories such as diplomats, athletes, and individuals whose presence in Mali serves clearly established national interests are excluded from the suspension.
The ministry stressed that the measure is not open-ended. Officials stated it would be reviewed regularly in line with how bilateral relations develop and that any adjustments to the policy would be communicated through official government channels.
US: Mali cites sovereignty in diplomatic standoff
Bamako framed the decision as part of a wider push to assert its sovereignty and demand equal treatment for its citizens abroad. The federal government described the US restrictions on Malian nationals as unilateral and without justification, positioning its own response as a measured application of international diplomatic norms.
The US State Department currently maintains a Level 4 travel advisory for Mali, its highest level, advising American citizens not to travel to the country due to crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. The latest entry suspension adds a formal legal dimension to the already strained travel picture for US nationals seeking to visit the West African nation.
In a similar report, Legit.ng published that the US released a list of 25 African countries whose citizens must use regional visa hubs in 2026.
