Traders are placing bets again. According to market intelligence platform Santiment, derivatives open interest for Bitcoin has climbed to $23.4 billion as crypto prices recover.
Bitcoin isn’t alone. Santiment puts Ethereum’s open interest at $15.5 billion and Solana’s at $2.7 billion, which brings the three-asset total to roughly $41.6 billion.
What the numbers show
Open interest tracks the total value of outstanding futures and perpetual contracts that haven’t been closed or settled. It doesn’t tell you which direction traders are leaning. It tells you how much money is committed to the wager in the first place.
Santiment published its findings on October 21, 2026. The breakdown looks like this:
- Bitcoin: $23.4 billion in open interest
- Ethereum: $15.5 billion in open interest
- Solana: approximately $2.7 billion in open interest
- Combined: roughly $41.6 billion
Each asset tells a slightly different story. Ethereum stands out the most, posting what Santiment describes as its clearest and most sustained open interest increase since August.
Bitcoin’s open interest is rising, but the asset remains below its spring highs.
Solana has shown increased volatility during this stretch, according to Santiment.
How this compares to September
In an earlier observation from September 2026, Santiment recorded Bitcoin’s open interest at around $25.84 billion. That reading came during a period of market rallies and short-term liquidations. So the current $23.4 billion figure is climbing, but it hasn’t yet returned to where things stood a month or so earlier.
According to Santiment’s research, altcoins are increasingly attracting speculative interest, with Bitcoin’s performance acting as an anchor for the broader market.
Why rising leverage cuts both ways
Santiment’s read on the data is straightforward. When open interest rises alongside prices, it points to greater trader participation and a stronger appetite for leveraged positions.
The firm also attached a caveat. Santiment warns that significant increases in open interest can lead to cascading liquidations if prices reverse.
Here is how a cascade works. A trader using leverage posts a small amount of collateral to control a much larger position. If the price moves against them far enough, the exchange closes the position automatically. Those forced sales push prices further in the same direction, triggering the next batch of liquidations.
Santiment, which has been analyzing crypto market behavior since its founding in 2016, frequently tracks this kind of positioning data to flag when sentiment may be running ahead of fundamentals.
What this means for traders and the market
Ethereum’s steady climb is the clearest signal in the dataset. A sustained build in open interest since August, rather than a sudden spike, suggests deliberate positioning.
Bitcoin’s open interest is recovering, but the asset sits below its spring highs and its positioning remains under the September reading.
Solana’s open interest is the smallest of the three at approximately $2.7 billion, and its heightened volatility means leveraged positions there can unwind faster than in deeper markets.
The practical signals to monitor are funding rates, liquidation volumes, and whether open interest keeps rising faster than prices themselves. If leverage starts outpacing the actual price recovery, Santiment’s warning about cascades becomes more relevant.
