Both teams entered 2026 with high expectations, but disappointing starts have made this matchup especially important as they look to turn their seasons around.
Penn State enters the contest with a 3-3 record after dropping three consecutive games against Big Ten opponents. The Nittany Lions suffered a 31-23 defeat to USC last weekend, continuing a frustrating stretch under first-year head coach Matt Campbell. Despite their struggles, Penn State has shown flashes of potential, particularly on defense, where the team ranks among the conference leaders in pass defense and turnover margin. With the Nittany Lions still searching for their first conference victory, Saturday presents an opportunity to get back on track against a familiar rival.
Michigan has faced similar struggles, entering the matchup with a 3-2 record and 0-2 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines are coming off a bye week following a 20-14 loss to Minnesota, giving head coach Kyle Whittingham additional time to prepare for Penn State. While Michigan’s offense has struggled to find consistency, its defense ranks among the best in the country, allowing just 241.4 yards per game. The Wolverines have also won four of their last five home meetings against Penn State, giving them reason for optimism heading into Saturday’s contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on CBS.
