Guwahati, Oct 15: Two men accused of dragging a woman along a road during a bag-snatching attempt in Guwahati’s Kahilipara area were shot in the legs during a police operation in the early hours of Thursday.
The accused, identified as Prasanta Boro alias Melo, 20, from Tangla in Udalguri district, and Rahul Das, 25, from Sualkuchi in Kamrup district, were admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) around 2.52 am for treatment.
The incident that led to their arrest occurred around 5.45 am on October 5 in the Janakpur area of Kahilipara. The duo, allegedly riding a Honda Activa scooter, attempted to snatch a woman’s bag and dupatta. When she resisted and held on to her belongings, she was dragged along the road for nearly 100 metres, sustaining bruises and other injuries.
CCTV footage showing the woman being dragged while crying for help circulated widely on social media, triggering public concern over street crime and women’s safety in the city.
Following the incident, a team from Basistha Police Station under the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) traced the suspects using technical surveillance. Police opened fire during an operation near Brahmaputra Bazar in the early hours of October 15, injuring both men. Police personnel also reportedly sustained minor injuries during the operation.
Police recovered the Honda Activa scooter bearing registration number AS-01-BL-1452, allegedly used in the snatching attempt. A Redmi mobile phone, a helmet and other items suspected to be stolen were also seized.
According to police officials, the accused confessed during interrogation to their alleged involvement in multiple snatching incidents across Guwahati, including in Jalukbari, Kahilipara, Lalmati, Sualkuchi, Singimari and Ulubari. Their alleged involvement in these cases remains subject to further investigation and legal proceedings.
The operation comes amid concerns over street snatching incidents involving two-wheeler-borne suspects targeting pedestrians and commuters. Police have intensified surveillance and enforcement measures to identify those involved in such crimes.
