Johannesburg Zoo is inviting senior citizens to enjoy a month of wildlife, fresh air, and family bonding, with free entry for visitors aged 60 and above throughout October in celebration of Senior Citizens Month.
The initiative aims to allow older residents to reconnect with nature and spend quality time with loved ones. Seniors can visit the zoo by presenting proof of identity, while families, care homes, and senior citizen groups are encouraged to plan outings and enjoy the experience together.
The offer forms part of a month-long programme of activities aimed at celebrating older people and creating memorable experiences across generations.
On October 22, visitors can also take advantage of a discounted entrance fee of R22 per person as the Johannesburg Zoo marks its 122nd anniversary. Senior citizens aged 60 and above will continue to enjoy free entry on the day.
The programme will include a blanket and scarf donation drive on October 27, starting at 9am, under the #67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela initiative. Knitting enthusiasts are encouraged to donate handmade or purchased blankets and scarves for vulnerable senior citizens.
Seniors from homes in Soweto, Lenasia, Eldorado Park, and Alexandra will receive the donated items as a gesture of warmth, care and appreciation. Various City of Johannesburg departments will also be present to showcase free and discounted services available to older residents and help them access support.
Individuals and businesses wishing to donate hampers or spoil older people are encouraged to contact the zoo. In addition, the city’s Transport Department and Rea Vaya are engaging taxi associations to facilitate free transport to the zoo for senior citizens during October, helping to address transport costs and accessibility barriers.
Visitors will be able to explore the Zoo using its hop-on, hop-off shuttle service, which makes it easier to see attractions including the Big Five and the Animals of the Amazon exhibit, featuring a walk-through freshwater aquarium.
The month will culminate in the zoo’s Halloween celebration on October 31, offering spooky surprises and family entertainment for visitors of all ages.
Johannesburg Zoo is encouraging residents to diarise the activities, pack a picnic, and bring their grandparents along for a month dedicated to celebrating older people.
“October is about celebrating their lives, restoring connection and creating wonderful memories together,” spokesperson Jenny Moodley said in a statement on Sunday.
