The release of the abducted prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members is a welcome development, but it should not make the government relax its efforts against kidnapping. Rather, it should serve as a wake-up call to strengthen security on Nigerian highways.
The incident has exposed the dangers faced by young graduates travelling to fulfil their national service obligations. Although their freedom brings relief to their families, the fear and trauma associated with their abduction cannot be ignored.

The government must understand that rescuing victims is not enough; preventing future abductions should be a priority. Security agencies must strengthen highway patrols, improve intelligence gathering and respond quickly to reports of suspicious activities.
