KUALA TERENGGANU: A teenage boy was arrested at 11.30am today on suspicion of raping a 15-year-old girl at a market here.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the suspect, a student at a school in the district, was arrested after police received a report from the girl's mother.
He said the mother had earlier been informed by a security guard working at the market that her daughter had been seen partially unclothed with a boy at the premises.
"The girl later told her mother that she had been raped by the boy. She also admitted that she was in a relationship with the suspect," he said.
Azli said the case was being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
He said an application for the suspect's remand would be made at the Kuala Terengganu magistrate's court tomorrow to facilitate further investigations.
Azli also said the Kuala Terengganu district police headquarters had opened 6 investigation papers involving sexual offences between Oct 1 and 14.
