Conservationists in Australia’s Cape York Peninsula have recorded a rare breakthrough for an endangered bird after a palm cockatoo chick hatched and fledged from an artificial tree hollow, according to ABC News.
The achievement followed the installation of 29 artificial nesting hollows across northern Cape York, where a shortage of suitable old-growth trees has made breeding increasingly difficult for the striking black parrot. In a promising sign, an adult pair laid an egg in one of the new hollows just a month after it was installed, offering evidence that artificial habitats could help address a critical gap in the species’ breeding grounds. The milestone was achieved through a project led by conservation organisation People for Wildlife, working with Apudthama Traditional Owners and palm cockatoo expert Dr Christina Zdenek. The team’s work, reported by Cape York Weekly and documented by the organisation, is considered the first recorded instance worldwide of a palm cockatoo chick successfully fledging from an artificial hollow.
Why palm cockatoos need old trees
Palm cockatoos (Probosciger aterrimus) are among Australia’s most distinctive parrots.
They have glossy black feathers, prominent crests, large bills and bright red cheek patches. Males are also known for a striking courtship behaviour: using sticks or seed pods to drum rhythmically against tree trunks. But the birds depend on something that cannot easily be replaced: large tree hollows suitable for nesting. According to People for Wildlife, palm cockatoos need unusually spacious cavities, generally found in trees that may be around 300 years old.
ABC News reported that it can take more than 250 years for trees to develop hollows large enough to accommodate the birds. These cavities form gradually as termites and fungi break down sections of old trees. In some cases, a cyclone must also break off the top of a tree to expose the hollow’s interior. The process makes suitable nesting sites both rare and difficult to replace once lost.Land clearing, habitat degradation, wildfires and extreme weather can destroy old trees or reduce the number of safe nesting sites.
The Australian Wildlife Conservancy also identifies inappropriate fire regimes and competition for hollows as threats to the species. The scarcity matters because palm cockatoos reproduce slowly. People for Wildlife says females lay just one egg approximately every two years. The Australian Wildlife Conservancy similarly describes the species as having one of the lowest reproductive rates among parrots, leaving populations vulnerable when breeding attempts fail.People for Wildlife estimates that fewer than 2,000 palm cockatoos remain in the wild in Australia. The birds are found in Australia’s remote Cape York Peninsula, although the species also occurs in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The Cape York population belongs to a distinct subspecies.
How artificial hollows were installed
To address the shortage of breeding sites, the conservation team has been creating new nesting spaces and modifying existing hollows to make them more suitable for palm cockatoos. Some artificial hollows are made by hollowing out sections of large fallen trees and lifting them into the canopy. The team is also studying the physical characteristics of natural hollows already used by the birds, helping researchers understand which features make a cavity suitable for nesting. The project has installed 29 artificial hollows at carefully selected locations in northern Cape York. The aim is not simply to provide more cavities, but to create spaces that match the birds’ specific nesting requirements. The work has been supported by the Australian Geographic Society, which awarded People for Wildlife a $20,000 grant in October 2025 through its Awards for Nature programme. The project also received support through Queensland’s threatened-species research funding programme.
Cameras captured evidence of breeding
The successful nest was monitored from the ground by the Apudthama land management team, while wildlife-friendly cameras positioned in the canopy recorded activity around the hollow.
According to People for Wildlife, the cameras captured nearly 8,000 images between September and December 2025. The images documented the adult birds exploring, entering and leaving the nesting space, providing evidence that the hollow was being used. The pair laid an egg in September 2025, around a month after the artificial hollow was installed. Monitoring continued as the chick developed, eventually capturing an image of the fledgling perched on the hollow before leaving the nest. The successful fledging was announced in March 2026. The result was significant because it demonstrated that an artificial hollow could support not only initial nesting activity, but also the development of a chick to the stage when it leaves the nest. The achievement is a practical breakthrough for conservationists trying to reproduce the conditions palm cockatoos need to breed. It also offers a potential way to supplement natural nesting sites in landscapes where centuries-old trees are scarce or threatened.
A breakthrough, not a complete solution
The project’s success does not mean the palm cockatoo’s decline has been reversed. The birds’ slow reproductive rate means population recovery could take considerable time, and the availability of nesting cavities is only one part of their survival needs.Natural habitats must still provide food, safe breeding territories and protection from fires and other threats. Artificial hollows also need ongoing monitoring to determine whether birds use them consistently and whether chicks survive beyond fledging. The Australian Wildlife Conservancy notes that palm cockatoos rely on multiple large trees for nesting and defend their hollows year-round. Protecting existing old-growth trees and managing fire risks therefore remain important alongside the installation of artificial structures. For the Cape York project, however, the fledged chick provides a tangible result. The team has shown that a carefully designed artificial hollow can be accepted by a wild pair and can support a successful breeding attempt. With 29 hollows installed, researchers now have an opportunity to monitor how widely the birds use the new sites and whether the approach can be replicated.
