The Youth TIPRA Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, lodged a police complaint on Wednesday against social media content creator Amir Shokeen, accusing him of racially abusing and humiliating an indigenous youth from Tripura in a video circulated online.
In a complaint submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of NCC Police Station in Agartala, the organisation sought registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000. It also urged the police to coordinate with cybercrime authorities and the Delhi Police to investigate the incident.
Addressing the media, Tipra Motha MDC and YTF general secretary Prasmit Debbarma said the video contained derogatory remarks about Tripura and showed an indigenous youth being subjected to humiliating treatment. He called on Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and the Union government to take steps to address racial harassment of people from the Northeast in other parts of the country.
“People from the Northeast are Indians. Why should Tiprasas be called Chinese when they go to Delhi, or Bengalis from Tripura be mistaken for Bangladeshis?” Debbarma said, questioning the racial stereotyping faced by people from the region.
The complaint identified Shokeen through his Instagram handle, @amirshokeen, and cited a link to the video, which it said was uploaded on September 19, 2026. According to the YTF, the video was reportedly recorded in Delhi and showed the content creator allegedly referring to the youth as “Chinese” and using a derogatory term for Tripura. The organisation also accused him of making inappropriate physical gestures and harassing the youth while recording the interaction for social media.
The YTF described the alleged conduct as an affront to the dignity of the individual and the people of Tripura, arguing that racial slurs and attempts to question the national identity of citizens from the Northeast were unacceptable.
Debbarma also referred to the alleged killing of Angel Chakma in Dehradun, citing it while highlighting concerns over the safety and treatment of people from the Northeast outside the region. He urged the chief minister to raise the issue with the Union government and seek measures to prevent such incidents. The complaint was signed by YTF president Suraj Debbarma and other office-bearers.
Meanwhile, Shokeen released an apology video in which he expressed regret for hurting the sentiments of the people of Tripura. He said he had been unaware of the state and claimed that the video was scripted, adding that the youth being described online as a victim of racial discrimination was also part of the script.
The controversy has also drawn reactions from political leaders across party lines. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, BJP leader Devid Debbarma and several Tipra Motha leaders have demanded strict action against the content creator.
