A six-year-old girl is recovering well after allegedly being stabbed multiple times at a school in Umhlali.
A 16-year-old boy is in police custody and is expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court.
The child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after the Tuesday morning incident, which sparked widespread concern.
There are calls for the teenage suspect to be denied bail and undergo psychological assessment.
Samantha Meyrick, spokesperson for IPSS Medical Rescue, confirmed the child's parents said she was recovering well.
“The parents said the child underwent surgery and is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery. For now, the family is asking for privacy as their child recovers,” said Meyrick.
The six-year-old sustained three stab wounds to her chest, stomach and arm.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed that a 16-year-old boy had been arrested in connection with cases of attempted murder and assault following the stabbing.
“It is alleged that the teenager entered a classroom occupied by pupils and a teacher, locked the door and stabbed a six-year-old girl multiple times before attempting to flee the scene,” said Ngcobo.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had previously been arrested for intimidation in April 2026, she said.
The 16-year-old was previously arrested on July 3 in connection with an alleged attempted bombing at Ballito Junction Regional Mall on March 29.
He was released three days later after the matter was not enrolled due to insufficient evidence.
The incident has since prompted the Rise Up Movement NPO to formally approach the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, calling on the State to oppose bail and seek the teenager's continued detention in the interests of public safety.
The organisation's founder, Josha Daniel, submitted a written application requesting that the suspect undergo a psychological assessment, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the latest incident warrant closer scrutiny.
“The Rise Up Movement NPO believes that incidents of this nature require more than a response to the immediate criminal allegations,” said Daniel.
“Where there are verified indications of previous concerning behaviour, the relevant authorities must examine whether appropriate interventions were considered, implemented and monitored.”
The teenager remains in police custody as he awaits his court appearance at KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court.
