A renowned adventure photographer suffered severe spinal injuries after plummeting 200 feet while hiking in Portugal, his family revealed.
Kyle Quin Schrock, of San Diego, was hiking in Madeira on October 11 when the trail crumbled beneath him, his sister-in-law said.
“He was airlifted to the hospital, where he is still in the ICU waiting for spinal surgery, the healing of his broken ribs, and the draining of his lungs,” Tara Schrock wrote in a GoFundMe campaign launched to support his recovery.
“He has a long road to recovery with travel assistance, rehabilitation and further medical needs in the USA. He will also not be able to work for months,” she added.
Shrock, a well-known outdoor adventure and lifestyle photographer, boasts more than 1.3 million followers on his Instagram account.
The account features photos of his global travels, with his sister-in-law adding that he “has traversed the world 10x over.”
“I fell about 60 meters, I thought it was my death but eventually got caught on a piece of grass. Like a little bush,” Shrock wrote in one Instagram post.
He graduated from Brigham Young University-Hawaii in 2014 with an accounting degree and worked as a content creator for nearly 12 years after, according to his LinkedIn.
Prior to college, Shrock served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Costa Rica where, he became fluent in Spanish.
The GoFundMe had raised more $11,700 of its $30,000 goal as of Friday afternoon.
