LUCENA CITY — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has completed 170 solar-powered irrigation projects across Calabarzon as part of efforts to ensure a reliable and cost-efficient water supply for farmers amid the threat of prolonged dry conditions due to a “super El Niño,” according to the agency’s office in Region IV-A on Tuesday (October 13).
The agency said the projects reduce its dependence on fuel-powered pumps and promote more sustainable irrigation for farming communities.

“More than just a number, these projects mean water for farms, support for farmers, and stronger preparedness for the challenges of a changing climate,” NIA said.

The construction of solar-powered irrigation systems is part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to improve farmers’ access to reliable irrigation facilities and strengthen the government’s engagement with agricultural communities.
NIA said it has also been conducting regular project monitoring visits to ensure that the irrigation systems are functioning properly and providing the necessary services to farmers.
Regular field inspections and coordination with irrigators’ associations are among the agency’s measures to address farmers’ irrigation needs, it added.
Maintenance activities include clearing canals and removing obstructions, desilting waterways using the agency’s heavy equipment, and inspecting and maintaining irrigation gates and other mechanical components.
These efforts also form part of NIA’s El Niño mitigation measures, which aim to keep irrigation facilities in good working condition, optimize the distribution and use of available water supplies, and help sustain farmers’ livelihoods during periods of limited rainfall. /jpv
