Police probing Sri Lanka’s organised crime networks have uncovered what they believe is a key financial link connecting several underworld figures, with Mohamed Irfan Faiz alias ‘Undiyal Rifan’ allegedly handling their money transfers and settlements.
Two telephone recordings now being examined by the CID and State Intelligence Service (SIS) allegedly place Rifan in conversation with Dubai-based underworld figure and drug trafficker Russell Smith, discussing lawyer fees and a recent Rs.25 million loss in a narcotics delivery operation.
The recordings, which are also circulating on social media, are being scrutinised as investigators seek to establish Rifan’s role in the financial operations of Smith and other organised crime figures.
One recording is 6 minutes and 24 seconds long, while the other runs for 7 minutes and 3 seconds, sources familiar with the investigation said.
Police believe Rifan has been operating as a financial intermediary for Smith, handling ‘undiyal’ money transfers connected to organised criminal activities. Smith is alleged to operate several drug distribution networks in Sri Lanka, particularly in the Mount Lavinia and Ratmalana areas.
Investigators have also found that Smith allegedly introduced Rifan to a number of his underworld associates in Sri Lanka and overseas, including contacts in Nepal, India and Dubai.
