Agartala, October 15: Tripura is stepping up efforts to expand renewable energy, with a target of generating 500 MW of clean energy by 2030. Plans to install rooftop solar systems in 1.5 lakh households, convert more than 5,000 drinking water pumps to solar power and develop large-scale electricity storage facilities are among the initiatives being pursued to strengthen the state’s energy infrastructure.
These measures were highlighted during the observance of World Standards Day 2026 at the corporate office auditorium of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) on Wednesday. The programme was jointly organised by the Indian Building Congress (Tripura State Centre) and TSECL under the theme, “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Affordable and Clean Energy.”
TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu, addressing the gathering as the chief guest, stressed that expanding clean energy was essential to ensuring energy security while keeping electricity affordable and accessible. He noted that the growing use of artificial intelligence and other modern technologies was driving up electricity demand, making renewable energy increasingly important.
According to Basu, Tripura currently has around 17 MW of installed rooftop solar capacity. The proposed expansion aims to add 150 MW through installations across 1.5 lakh households. The corporation is also considering an electricity storage system with a capacity of approximately 200 MWh at the 33 kV level.
He further highlighted plans to solarise over 5,000 drinking water pumps and train local youths in solar power technology. These initiatives form part of the state’s broader energy transformation efforts.
Basu also called for financial sustainability among power distribution companies, alongside technological modernisation, energy efficiency and dependable electricity services.
Engineer Chinmoy Debnath, National President of the Indian Building Congress; Hemanta Verma, Chairman of the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission; NIT Agartala Associate Professor Subhadeep Bhattacharya; and TSECL General Manager Swapan Debbarma were among those present. The speakers stressed the role of effective standards in promoting clean energy and environmentally sustainable development.
