A RED alert for torrential rain remains in place until 10am on Monday in parts of the Valencian Community with six municipalities cut off due to flooding.
The Valencian government has sent a new Es-Alert message to people in the southern coastal area of Valencia province and the northern coast of Alicante province.
It states that as persistent and intense rains plus flooding continues, residents should not look to travel and should remain in their homes.
The Government delegate for the Valencia region, Pilar Bernabe, has said that half a dozen municipalities in the Valencia province coastal area from the south of Gandia to Oliva are cut off and impassable due to floods.
Bernabe stated that there are ‘many people trapped’ and lorries cannot access those areas because they are flooded.
Soldiers from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) have been deployed from Betera to provide support in Oliva, with some homes suffering power cuts.
Numerous helicopter rescues have taken place in the area.

The town’s mayor, Yolanda Pastor, said that around 2,000 people who were based in seven campsites have been evacuated.
She added that the lower area of the town near to the beach is flooded and rescues are being carried out.
Pastor described the situation as ‘very complicated’ and appealed for caution from residents
Pego’s mayor, Enrique Moll, said that in the lower part of the municipality- in the natural park area of the Pego-Oliva marsh- there are people on house roofs waiting to be rescued by air.
Rain in the southern Safor area of Valencia province and Alicante’s Marina Alta has seen the highest recorded falls since 1987.
According to the State Meteorological Agency, storms brought heavy rainfall in an area between Pego, Real de Gandia, Villalonga and Barx.
The Girona River has burst its banks in the Marina Alta town of Els Poblets, causing flooding in areas near the riverbed, according to the local council.
