Professor Albertas Vitkus (February 5, 1929 – September 16, 2026), a distinguished Lithuanian scientist and habilitated doctor of sciences, died on September 16 at age 97, the family announced in a press release on Sunday.
Professor Vitkus devoted his life to medicine, scientific research, and educating future generations of physicians.
He graduated from the Kaunas Medical Institute in 1954. From 1956 to 2003, he taught at the institutions that eventually became the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU). He was appointed professor in 1971 and served as head of the Department of Histology and Embryology from 1971 to 1994.
Professor Vitkus combined his academic career with extensive clinical experience. He worked for ten years as an internal medicine physician at Kaunas Railway Hospital and spent four years as an emergency medical physician.
His clinical background continued to inform his scientific work throughout his career, as he believed that research findings should ultimately contribute to medical practice.
His principal research interests included experimental approaches to preventing myocardial infarction, the study of cardiac tissue, and other processes associated with heart function. In addressing questions in cardiology, he sought to move beyond the boundaries of individual disciplines, bringing together biochemists and researchers from other fields of medicine in collaborative studies.
In 1987, Professor Vitkus received the Lithuanian State Prize for a series of scientific studies conducted in collaboration with biochemist Professor Antanas Praškevičius, anatomist Professor Rimvydas Stropus, and other researchers.
His scientific legacy includes more than 250 research articles, books, textbooks, and educational materials. He authored and published four textbooks for students, as well as four educational publications.
He devoted considerable attention to the development and standardisation of Lithuanian medical terminology, which served generations of Lithuanian medical students and physicians.
His scientific contributions also extended to practical inventions. In 1989, he developed devices for preparing histological specimens and for coronary artery occlusion as part of his research.
Over nearly five decades of teaching, countless future Lithuanian physicians attended Professor Vitkus's lectures.
His colleagues and students will remember him not only as a scholar of histology and embryology, but also as a physician, educator, and mentor who dedicated his professional life to medicine, scientific research, and the education of future generations of medical professionals.
A farewell ceremony for Professor Albertas Vitkus will take place on October 19, 2026, from 13:00 to 20:00 in the main hall of the Good Shepherd Parish (Gerojo Ganytojo Parapija), V. Krėvės Ave. 95A, Kaunas.
On October 20, 2026, a funeral Mass will be held at 09:00 at the Good Shepherd Parish Church. The funeral procession will depart for Petrašiūnai Cemetery at 13:00.
