Actress Zazie Beetz has lit up the screen in movies like Joker, Deadpool 2, and the hit television show Atlanta. The star was born in Berlin, where she lived for the first few years of her life, and she maintains a connection to her former home. When she married husband David Rysdahl, they reportedly had the ceremony at the glamorous venue Salveymühle by Zaza in Uckermark, Germany.
Beetz and Rysdahl live a quiet married life, but there are still some details out there about her husband and their relationship. Here’s everything we know.
Who is David Rysdahl?
Like Beetz, Rysdahl is an actor. He’s had some great roles in recent years, including the character Donald Hornig in the Oscar-nominated film Oppenheimer and a turn as Wayne Lyon in Fargo. They actually both starred in the episode of Black Mirror titled “Mazey Day,” as well as two movies: Cathy Yan’s 2018 film Dead Pigs, and 2020’s Nine Days.
Working together must have gone well because in 2022, they started their new production company, Sleepy Poppy.
“Zazie and I both grew up in the industry, kind of approaching it collaboratively,” Rysdahl told the Daily News at the time. “Sometimes as an actor you come in, do a job, and it’s over. There’s so much more on that bone. I want to be in the editing room. I want to help put it together beforehand.”
He added, “She and I started coming into it as producers and saying, ‘Can we support the voices that we care about?’ Can we create the stories and have a little bit more room at the table to be a part of that? That’s kind of what the impetus was behind it.”
In 2022, Rysdahl told Screen Rant that they were working on an adaptation of the fairy tale Rapunzel in which Beetz would play the captured princess.
“So we are making a Rapunzel story, kind of what happens after, for Zazie,” he shared. “She’ll have a huge afro. That’s something we’re excited about writing.”
He added, “She’s gonna kill it. She’s so good.”
How did they meet?
Beetz met Rysdahl during an acting workshop, according to Essence, and they started dating around 2014.
How long have they been married?
In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, it was revealed that the couple were engaged. It seems as though the wedding took place in late 2023, because their wedding planner shared a post of images and video clips from the day that October.
In the clips, Beetz can be seen wearing a white strapless wedding gown and carrying an orchid bouquet. The planner wrote that the couple were going for an “Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding vibe.”
In December of that year, Beetz shared an Instagram post with Rysdahl to celebrate his appearance in Fargo, calling him her “model husband.” Then he wrote in a December holiday post, “Happy holidays from Mrs. Clawwwssss!”
They walked the red carpet at SXSW 2026.
On March 17, Beetz and Rysdahl attended the Austin premiere of her film They Will Kill You at SXSW. The couple dressed in coordinated outfits on the red carpet, with Rysdahl wearing a red suit and Beetz in a black dress with red flowers woven into her braids.
