Retro gaming still has a strong appeal. The modern consoles and games have their own attractions, but older games still have their fanbase. One of the primary reasons behind the popularity is their easy gameplay that keeps players busy for hours. That’s why Atari’s latest move is exciting.
The company is bringing back the Atari 800XL, an 8-bit home computer that first launched in 1983. The modern edition keeps the classic design but adds features that work with modern TVs and accessories. Most importantly, it features HDMI output, USB ports, a working cartridge slot, and 25 built-in games. It also keeps the full-size keyboard, so users can do more than play games. For veteran players, it brings back a piece of gaming history while offering a simple way to use it today.
Atari 800XL Returns With 25 Classic Games
The original Atari 800XL arrived when home computers were gaining popularity. It featured 64KB of memory, which was enough for gaming, coding, and other computer-based tasks. The newer model aims to bring back a similar experience, with 25 featured games. Most importantly, multiple of them were renowned from the previous decade. The list of games includes names like:
Airball
Asteroids
Basketball
BattleZone
Berzerk
Boulder Dash
Bristles
Capture the Flag
Centipede
Crystal Castles
Elektraglide
Encounter
Flip and Flop
Henry's House
These games are simple to understand but can be hard to master. The aim is often to beat a score, avoid danger, or stay alive for as long as possible.
The above-mentioned games are not the only ones the console presents. It further has titles including,
M.U.L.E.
Millipede
Miner 2049er
Missile Command
O'Riley's Mine
Star Raiders II
The Seven Cities of Gold
Wavy Navy
Each game offers a different kind of challenge. While some test the quick reactions of players, others ask them to plan their strategy carefully to progress. This mix is what appeals to gamers. For example, older players will enjoy the games that they have probably played years ago. Similarly, the younger generation can understand how early-stage video games used to look like before large 3D worlds and online play became common.
Of course, these games will not look or play like modern console titles. Their graphics are simple, and the controls are often basic, but that’s where the games’ charm lies. Players can focus on the game instead of spending time learning complex systems.

How Atari's Retro Console Meets Modern Gaming Hardware
The biggest change is how easily the new 800XL can connect to modern devices. The original computer was released at a time when connecting a computer to a TV was almost impossible. The new version has HDMI output, so users can plug it into a compatible TV or monitor. Additionally, it has four USB-A ports for controllers and storage devices, including, THECXSTICK joystick keeps the classic look but adds eight buttons. This gives players a familiar way to control their games.
What may attract gamers more is the keyboard. The new 800XL has a full-size mechanical keyboard and supports Atari BASIC. This means users can explore simple coding and write their own programs instead of using it only for gaming.
It also includes a few modern features for players who want a more relaxed experience. The device supports save slots for each game and a rewind option. If a player makes a mistake, they can go back and try again. These features make older games easier to enjoy without changing their basic design.
Now, if you are interested in experiencing retro gaming, Atari has listed the new 800XL at USD 219.99. Pre-orders are already opened for the console and shipping is planned for April 23, 2027.

Atari 800XL Brings Classic Gaming Back
The return of the Atari 800XL shows that old gaming consoles aren't completely dead. The mix of classic games and moden hardware features is what makes the console interesting to most young gamers. Of course, the console won’t match modern consoles in graphics or power, but that is not the point; it's for people who enjoy simple games, retro designs, and the feel of classic computing.
If the new model delivers a smooth experience, it could appeal to collectors, longtime Atari fans, and younger players who want to try something different. Sometimes, a good game does not need fancy graphics; it just needs to be enjoyable.
