Reno Omokri has received formal diplomatic clearance to serve as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico following the Mexican government’s approval of his appointment.
Omokri announced the development in a post on X on Tuesday, revealing that the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, had presented the official agrément confirming his acceptance by the host country.
“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua, to the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Ambassador Babagana Wakil,” he wrote.
Beyond Mexico, Omokri’s diplomatic responsibilities will extend to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, where he will also represent Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 as part of a list of nominees that included former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate subsequently confirmed Omokri and other nominees in December 2025. On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries, with Omokri posted to Mexico City.
His deployment, however, had been awaiting the Mexican government’s formal consent, a requirement in the diplomatic appointment process.
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs identified Mexico and Japan as countries that had yet to formally approve two outstanding ambassadorial postings. The ministry said discussions with the countries were ongoing and expressed optimism that the necessary clearances would be secured.
Omokri had earlier rejected claims that Mexico had turned down his appointment. During an appearance on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.
Agrément refers to the formal approval granted by a host country before a foreign government’s nominee can assume an ambassadorial position.
Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and is widely known for his political commentary.
