The Department of Emergency Medicine, Government Rajaji Hospital and Madurai Medical College, organised a district-level multidisciplinary mass casualty awareness and rescue drill at the Madurai Medical College grounds here on Saturday to mark World Trauma Day.
A simulated road traffic collision demonstrated the complete emergency response sequence, covering bystander assistance, emergency alerts, scene safety, rescue, triage, initial treatment and ambulance transport. The exercise highlighted the importance of timely intervention and coordinated action in saving lives.
Personnel from the district administration, Disaster Management, Fire and Rescue Services, Police, Traffic Police, ‘108’ Emergency Ambulance Services and Health Services participated alongside doctors, nurses, medical and allied health students, and hospital support staff.
District Collector Nishant Krishna appreciated the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders. The programme strengthened public awareness and reinforced the importance of interdepartmental preparedness for major accidents and emergencies, he added.
Dean L. Arul Sundaresh Kumar emphasised the critical importance of administering immediate first aid following an accident. He noted that prompt care significantly accelerates recovery and substantially increases survival rates.
