Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has questioned the tactics of manager Michael Carrick following the club's Champions League defeat in Como.
Manchester United suffered a humbling European defeat after losing 4-1 at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Wednesday night.
Defeat extended the club's winless run to seven games and has piled the pressure on Carrick, who has overseen a difficult start to the season.
Following Lisandro Martinez's outburst against the club's leadership at the weekend, Fernandes has gone public with his criticism.
The Portugal international questioned the tactical approach of Manchester United in Italy, after a performance that saw Carrick apologise to the fanbase. He said the Red Devils needed to be braver with their game-plan, after being well beaten by the Serie A side.
"It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence," Fernandes said.
Asked specifically whether he felt that Carrick had got his tactics wrong, Fernandes added: "That's on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable."
Carragher calls out Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes for questioning Michael Carrick's tactics in 4-1 Como defeat
Fernandes' interview received backlash from ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who called the captain's comments 'disgraceful'. He said the 32-year-old is part of the reason Manchester United cannot operate with a pressing plan.
"We said Lisandro Martinez was bang out of order for calling out the hierarchy," Carragher said onCBS Sports.
"For Bruno Fernandes to do that, it is a disgrace. Last season he was Player of the Year. That was due to Michael Carrick coming in as manager. He wouldn't have got that award without Carrick. He put him back in his right position.
"His attitude and the way he goes about things, it is not right at all. He has reacted like that because he was brought off and he has been embarrassed tonight by the manager.
"When he talks about pressing, whether it is man-to-man or zonal, for years, Bruno Fernandes has meant Man Utd can't press.
"He runs all over the place like a kid in the school yard for the supporters. They all think he's working hard, he is not. He is killing the rest of the team by doing it."
