Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are back on screen together in “Anyone But You,” though this time it’s not in theaters. The 2023 romantic comedy just premiered on HBO Max, making it one of the new options for the actress’s fans.
According to HBO Max’s release schedule, the film has been available on the platform since October 20, 2026. With this release, one of the most popular titles of Sweeney’s career returns to a streaming platform, having previously been available on Netflix, as well as through digital rental and purchase services.
What is “Anyone But You” about?
The story revolves around Bea, played by Sydney Sweeney, and Ben, played by Glen Powell. Their first date seems to be the start of a perfect relationship, but a misunderstanding causes their attraction to fizzle out.
Later, they run into each other at a wedding in Australia and decide to pretend they’re a couple, even though they can barely stand each other. Keeping up appearances turns out to be much harder than they expected.
The plot takes a turn when the two run into each other by chance at a wedding in Australia. To avoid complications, they decide to pretend they’re a couple—a situation that ultimately leads to new conflicts and romantic moments.
Directed by Will Gluck, the film takes William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing as its starting point and transposes its romantic entanglements into a contemporary story.
The arguments, misunderstandings, and attraction between the main characters drive a comedy in which the audience knows that their supposed indifference is unlikely to last.

Its box office run began modestly. Released on December 22, 2023, in the United States, it grossed about $6 million during its first weekend in the North American market. However, that opening was far from its peak: it ultimately grossed more than $88 million in the United States and Canada. Box Office Mojo
The worldwide box office total was even higher: $220.3 million, compared to an estimated production budget of $25 million. These figures reflect the film’s theatrical run, prior to its release on HBO Max, and illustrate the commercial appeal of a movie that reached a much wider audience than its initial release suggested.
The Phenomenon That Went Beyond the Movie
Anyone But You hit theaters in December 2023 with an approximate budget of $25 million and ended up grossing over $219 million at the global box office, becoming a major commercial success for a romantic comedy released in theaters.
Part of the conversation surrounding the film centered on the chemistry between Sweeney and Powell and the rumors that surfaced about a possible relationship between the two during the promotional campaign. However, those rumors should never be confused with confirmation of a romance between the actors.
