Aden – The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the continued military escalation in Yemen, warning that intensified fighting across multiple frontlines, particularly in Taiz governorate, is having devastating humanitarian consequences for civilians.
According to the UN News Centre, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric urged all parties to the conflict to exercise maximum restraint and prevent any further escalation of hostilities.
Dujarric stressed the importance of complying with international humanitarian law and called on all parties to refrain from launching direct attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure.
He also emphasized the need to take every possible precaution to protect civilians and civilian facilities from the effects of ongoing military operations.
The UN spokesperson reiterated the organization's longstanding position that there is no military solution to the Yemen conflict, urging all parties to pursue an inclusive dialogue aimed at reaching a negotiated political settlement.
He noted that the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, continues to actively engage in efforts to advance peace initiatives and facilitate a political process.
Addressing the humanitarian situation, Dujarric said the recent escalation has triggered large-scale displacement and aggravated shortages of essential supplies, particularly in and around Taiz, where intensified fighting has increased pressure on already vulnerable communities.
Despite the difficult operating environment, humanitarian workers reported that the United Nations and its humanitarian partners have continued to deliver life-saving assistance since early August, reaching affected populations in several areas of the country. However, aid agencies warn that ongoing hostilities, access constraints, and growing humanitarian needs continue to challenge relief operations.
The UN renewed its call for de-escalation, emphasizing that protecting civilians and advancing a political solution remain essential to ending the suffering of millions of Yemenis affected by more than a decade of conflict.
