If Vikings get chance to trade for Justin Herbert, the decision is painfully obvious originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It's almost strange that every season now, people have something to say about the Minnesota Vikings and their lack of success at quarterback.
The Vikings made an interesting offseason decision that made a lot of sense, bringing in Kyler Murray, considering they had to choose between J.J. McCarthy and Carson Wentz at the time.
It's safe to say the Vikings know they made the wrong decision letting Sam Darnold walk, but it is what it is at this point. The Vikings can't go back on it now and can only focus on trying to improve at the quarterback position in the short and long term.
As of now, no star quarterback seems available, though some have speculated that Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers could be had for the right price.
It remains uncertain what the Chargers plan to do now, but CBS believes that the Vikings are the most obvious suitor for him if he becomes available.
“It's clear that the Vikings have a championship-caliber defense (they're currently No. 1 in the NFL in fewest points allowed) but need help on offense. Herbert, in theory, could help the Vikings bridge that gap while becoming a surefire Super Bowl contender.
“While this season has been a mess so far, Herbert was without a doubt one of the league's best quarterbacks during his first six seasons. He threw for the second-most passing yards in league history during a player's first six seasons — only Peyton Manning threw for more yards. Herbert's 163 touchdowns was the sixth-most in league history for a player in that span,” CBS wrote.
There are always agendas around Herbert and who he is, but the reality is he's a very good player who has proven that throughout much of his career.
He might not be among the top three quarterbacks in the NFL, but he can post 4,000-plus yards with 25 touchdowns and fewer than 10 interceptions in a year in the right system.
The Chargers have been among the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season, if not the most disappointing, though it's still fair to question whether they'd move on from a player like him, since they know finding a franchise quarterback is no easy task.
