By Zoila Palma: Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson has recognized Belize’s farmers and food suppliers for their continued efforts to ensure food reaches consumers despite global crises and challenges affecting the agricultural sector.
Speaking during the World Food Day celebration at Chunox St. Viator Vocational High School this morning, Ferguson said farmers play a vital role in strengthening national food security, supporting livelihoods and protecting the environment.
He emphasized that the work of agricultural producers remains essential to getting food from farms to consumers.
“On the topic of agrifood systems, today it is just as important to recognize our heroes: farmers and food suppliers who labor throughout the food system – who ensure that food makes its way from Farm to table even amidst the dangers of the world’s crises,” Ferguson said.
“Farmers keep on providing food and we ought to recognize them,” he added.
He also stated, “It is their actions that shape our future by producing nutritious foods and securing our environment for a better life.”
The Minister concluded his recognition of the sector with the words, “Thank you, farmers.”
Ferguson said the Ministry of Agriculture continues working to improve food security, food quality and affordability while conserving the environment.
He noted that the Ministry pursues these goals through collaboration with development partners, engagement with social partners and outreach to rural and urban communities, with priority given to vulnerable populations.
