The Atlanta Braves made minimal moves in free agency last offseason, but their additions were enough to keep the team competitive and accomplish what they set out to do. Strengthening the bullpen was one of their priorities, and they did just that by bringing back Raisel Iglesias and adding Robert Suarez.
However, one move that did not receive as much attention at the time was Atlanta's trade for Mauricio Dubón.
“The Braves also acquired two-time Gold Glove winner Mauricio Dubon from the Houston Astros for Nick Allen in an exchange of infielders. Dubon, 31, appeared in 133 games with Houston last season and batted .241 while earning his second Gold Glove, each time as a utility infielder. He also won the award in 2023. Dubon had a $5 million salary this year, and he is eligible for salary arbitration. He can become a free agent after the 2026 World Series,” ESPN wrote.
Throughout his career, Dubón has played multiple positions, which allowed the Braves to use him wherever they needed him. However, toward the end of the season, he found himself in the starting role at shortstop.
“This signals Mauricio Dubón will take over primary SS duties after spending much of the summer in the OF. Braves SS rank in the bottom 3 in AVG/OBP/SLG and WAR since May 1,” Braves reporter Grant McAuley wrote.
Heading into the offseason, it is clear that the Braves have several decisions to make. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller believes Dubón could return to Atlanta if the circumstances work out.
“Mauricio Dubón was arguably Atlanta's most important player, not named Chris Sale, presumably headed for his third utility Gold Glove in four years. Despite never having a position to call his own and not logging enough plate appearances to qualify for a batting title in any season from 2021-25, Dubón has been worth 8.0 bWAR since the beginning of 2023, batting a respectable .268 during that time. If Atlanta can afford to re-sign him to a multi-year deal, we know he's a perfect fit,” Miller wrote.
Dubón made an impact in the clubhouse, but his value extended beyond the field. He became a player Atlanta fans could appreciate for his versatility, defensive ability, and passion for the game. As a Gold Glove winner and World Series champion, he brings valuable experience to the team.
Dubón played on a $6 million contract with the Braves last season. Only time will tell what happens with the versatile infielder, but Atlanta has an opening at shortstop that could make a reunion appealing for both sides.
