World of Warcraft just launched Patch 12.1.5. This update officially ends a 20-year era for the massively popular game. Players can now experience new story content, major class balances, and specific spec updates. Additionally, Blizzard introduced a massive 7-million gold customizable mount. This premium mount allows players to seamlessly swap out the vendors and NPCs it carries.
Recently, Blizzard also teased the future of the game. They unveiled the trailer for the upcoming 12.2 “Midnight” patch. However, this trailer did not reveal much information. Consequently, fans are still waiting for a proper resolution to Xal’atath’s storyline. Meanwhile, a teaser for “Last Titan”, the final expansion in the Worldsoul Saga, generated a highly positive reception among longtime fans.
World of Warcraft Patch 12.1.5 & The End for Lady Liadrin
Despite the exciting gameplay updates, many fans feel completely underwhelmed by the latest story beats. The new update features multiple quests centered around pacifying the Blood Elves of Quel’Thalas and the Amani Trolls of Zul’Aman. Specifically, the plot impacts Lady Liadrin. As the head of the Blood Elf Paladins, she has served as a beloved Horde faction leader since her debut in the “Burning Crusade” expansion back in January 2007.
(Story spoilers ahead)
During Patch 12.1.5, Liadrin channels the Holy energy of the Light to defeat an enemy named Kith’ix. Following the intense battle, her physical body simply collapses on a cave floor from extreme exhaustion. Ultimately, she dies. Sadly, players noticed that she received very little screen time, build-up, or character growth leading up to this disappointing conclusion.
Faction Inequality & Fan Backlash
Naturally, this unceremonious death sparked massive online debates. Players heavily criticized the writing quality and the overall direction of the story. Furthermore, many fans highlighted a clear difference in how Blizzard treats Horde versus Alliance leaders. For instance, the Alliance leader Malfurion experienced plenty of close calls over the years. Instead of dying, he simply retired and remains alive to potentially return later.
I understand the frustration of Horde players regarding their racial leaders, but there’s no point in pointing fingers at the Alliance, when it’s in just as bad a state as the Horde.

Conversely, Liadrin’s permanent death feels completely unnecessary and unearned to the community. As a result, her return in any meaningful capacity seems highly unlikely. However, some players are holding onto hope. Since the game recently added Undead Paladins, fans speculate that Liadrin might eventually return as a Forsaken.
Sylvanas Returns & Future Outlook
In a similar vein of confusing character treatment, Sylvanas also made a sudden appearance. She largely flew under the radar during the overall story following her massive role in the “Shadowlands” expansion. Yet, she abruptly returned at the end of the March on Quel’Thalas Raid to save her sister and nephew. Looking ahead, Sylvanas will receive a brand-new design this November for a separate project titled ‘WoW: Forever’.
Finally, rumors continue to circulate regarding console support for World of Warcraft. Currently, this remains completely unconfirmed and is not a guarantee for The Last Titan’s release. Moving forward, fans simply hope the next expansion delivers a more cohesive story. Above all, they want future updates to somehow justify the untimely loss of a 20-year character.
