A police box opened at Lake View Garden in Rangamati today to strengthen security for tourists and local visitors at the lakeside recreational spot.
The Rangamati Road Division handed over the police box to the district police at 10:30am today (13 October), followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib and Road Division Executive Engineer Sabuj Chakma attended the handover and inauguration.
Speaking at the event, Rakib said Lake View Garden was one of Rangamati's public recreational spaces where residents and tourists could enter without paying an admission fee.
He said police regularly monitored the area to ensure visitors' safety and expressed hope that the police box would strengthen security, allowing people to enjoy the site without disruption.
Sabuj said the garden had been developed to give residents and tourists an opportunity to enjoy Rangamati's natural beauty and views of Kaptai Lake.
The Road Division handed over the police box to the district police to help ensure visitors' safety, he added.
Although Rangamati is a tourist town, opportunities to explore and spend leisure time within the town without paying an entrance fee are limited. Entry charges have been introduced at previously popular free-access recreational sites, including the deputy commissioner's bungalow.
Against this backdrop, the Roads and Highways Department's Lake View Garden, developed near the Fishery Dam area, has become popular with local residents.
Featuring around 200 species of trees, the garden offers views of Kaptai Lake and space for walking and leisure. Both residents and tourists visit daily.
Those involved in managing the site see the police box as an important step towards ensuring the safety of these visitors.
Rangamati Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Road Division Sub-assistant Engineer Ranen Chakma, Tithi Chakma and others concerned attended the ceremony.
A jarul sapling was planted on the garden premises afterwards.
