National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam yesterday demanded the resignations of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, accusing them of failing to discharge their responsibilities over the past seven months.
He also announced a mass demonstration in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh on October 30 to protest deteriorating law and order, rising commodity and fuel prices, and the alleged politicisation of state institutions.
Nahid made the remarks while launching a week-long leaflet distribution campaign in the capital’s Karwan Bazar.
Terming the BNP-led government “anti-people and undemocratic” for its failure to implement reforms, he called on people to build resistance to secure their rights.
He alleged that the home minister had failed to curb crime and drug trafficking, while opposition activists and journalists continued to face attacks and harassment.
Criticising the government’s handling of the energy sector, Nahid questioned how long people would have to bear higher fuel prices because of international conflicts and what plans the government had to address the situation.
He said middle-income families were being forced to cut back on essential purchases.
NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, Senior Joint Convener Nasiruddin Patwary and Senior Joint Member Secretary Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain also spoke.
