MELAKA: A couple were arrested and a packet containing 0.22g of suspected syabu was seized after a one-hour chase in Tengkera yesterday.
Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Halim Abas said a special team from the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department arrested the 39-year-old man and 32-year-old woman in a Proton Saga at 7.20pm.
"At 6.20pm yesterday, the suspects were spotted driving suspiciously near an apartment in Tengkera.
"When ordered to stop for checks, the driver sped off and drove dangerously, including against traffic on several main roads in Melaka, to evade arrest," he said in a statement.
Halim said the suspects abandoned their vehicle at a dead end near a mosque in Kampung Sungai Putat and tried to flee on foot before being arrested.
Police found a transparent plastic packet, suspected to be syabu in the vehicle. Preliminary urine tests on both suspects were positive for methamphetamine.
Checks revealed that the male suspect had seven previous drug-related offences and one other criminal case, while the female suspect had 10 previous drug-related cases and one other criminal case.
"Both suspects have been remanded for four days starting today until Sunday to facilitate investigations under Sections 186 and 279 of the Penal Code, Section 42 of the Road Transport Act, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act," he said.
A video circulating on social media yesterday showed three police patrol cars pursuing a vehicle travelling against the flow of traffic near the Pantai Hospital intersection in Ayer Keroh. — BERNAMA
