On Saturday morning, National Police officers arrested a man on Palma's Passeig Born. They recognised him as one of a group, all Algerian, who had committed three street robberies with violence; they had stolen luxury watches. He was monitoring tourists and was accompanied by another man who had previously been arrested for similar offences.
This arrest was the result of an investigation by the Robbery Unit, which had determined that all three incidents were connected to the same group of individuals.
The first was on May 24 around 3.15pm. A couple of tourists were walking in the La Llotja and Moll Vell area. The man's arm was pinned against a wall and a watch was snatched from his wrist; it was valued at 37,500 euros.
The second was on September 4 around 1.30pm. A tourist was walking along C. Ramon Llull with his partner. He was approached from behind and knocked to the ground. His partner reacted by grabbing the attacker's backpack and t-shirt, causing him to fall. There was a struggle until he managed to take the watch, valued at 25,000 euros.
The third robbery occurred on September 26 around 12.30pm. A tourist was in the underground car park on Passeig Mallorca, accompanied by his wife. He was at the payment machine when two men approached him. One of them forcibly snatched the watch he was wearing; it was valued at 200,000 euros.
