Apple has introduced the HomePod mini 2, alongside its new HomeView smart home hub, upgraded Apple TV 4K, and Apple Home Collection.
The second-generation smart speaker adds Siri AI, a new Sound Glow visual feature, support for pairing as many as four speakers, and additional color choices.
S10 Chip Brings Siri AI
The Apple HomePod mini 2 is powered by Apple’s S10 chip, which enables its new Siri AI capabilities.
However, Siri AI requires the HomePod mini 2 to be paired with an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad.
Apple says Siri AI will eventually be able to recognize as many as six different users by their voices and provide personalized information and messages for each person.
These personalized Siri AI features will not be available when the speaker initially launches. Apple plans to enable them through a future software update.
New Sound Glow Feature
Apple has also introduced a feature called Sound Glow.
It turns the top surface of the HomePod mini 2 into a digital visual display that glows and animates while music is playing.
The lighting effects use colors taken from the currently playing song’s album artwork, giving each track a different visual appearance.
Up to Four Speakers Can Work Together
The HomePod mini 2 expands Apple’s multi-speaker capabilities.
Users can pair as many as four HomePod mini speakers to create a four-speaker surround setup when using the new Apple TV 4K.
The HomePod mini 2 can also function as a smart home hub, allowing users to control compatible connected home devices.
Five Color Options
Apple will sell the HomePod mini 2 in Blue, Green, Pink, Midnight, and White.
The new colors provide more choices than the traditional neutral finishes typically associated with smart speakers.
Price and Availability
The HomePod mini 2 is priced at $149 in the US.
Pre-orders are already open through the Apple Store in the US and 23 other regions.
