Kuwait’s Diplomatic Attache Omar Al-Saeed said his country’s bid for re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027-2029 term reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its active, responsible and constructive role.
The move, building on the contributions and initiatives Kuwait has made during its current membership, falls in the framework of efforts to enhance cooperation with member states to advance the Council’s objectives, he said in a speech to the UN General Assembly Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues (the Third Committee) on Monday evening.
Renewing Kuwait’s firm support for the UNHRC, Al-Saeed stressed that the Council’s work should be guided by the principles of universality, objectivity and impartiality, and away from politicization and double standards.
“In so doing, the Council could be better able to maintain its credibility, protect human rights and uphold human dignity,” he pointed out. The Kuwaiti diplomat noted that, during its 2024-2026 membership, Kuwait had been keen to actively participate in the Council’s work, including interactive dialogues and the Universal Periodic Review mechanism.
He underscored the importance of enhancing coordination between the UNHRC and the UNGA, while respecting their respective mandates, avoiding duplication and translating international commitments into tangible action.
“Promotion of human rights is measured not only by the scale of commitments, but also by the extent to which they are translated into reality that people can experience in their daily lives. “Kuwait is determined to continue contributing to international cooperation to protect rights and uphold human dignity without discrimination or selectivity,” Al-Saeed added.
