Earlier this year, Wizz Air became the first airline to operate a direct route from the UK to Armenia, and Metro was lucky to be on the first-ever flight.
Now, the budget carrier is giving sun-seekers even more reason to get excited, with three new Spanish destinations launching from London Luton next week.
With year-round services and one-way fares from less than £30, the new routes could be just the ticket for anyone dreaming of swapping Britain’s dismal weather for sunshine.
The new routes expand Wizz Air’s existing Spanish network from London Luton, which already includes seven destinations such as Bilbao, Barcelona and Seville.
Where can you fly to?
The new routes are Málaga, Granada and Asturias.
Málaga and Asturias flights will launch on October 25. Flights to Málaga will operate three to four times a week, and Asturias three times a week.
Meanwhile, services to Granada will begin on October 27 and run twice a week. All three routes will operate year-round.
WizzAir’s managing director Yvonne Moynihan said: ‘Spain has always been a favourite with British holidaymakers, but there’s so much more to the country than a summer beach holiday.
‘With three new routes launching from London Luton over the next week, we’re giving our customers even more choice when it comes to exploring Spain, whatever the time of year.
‘From winter sunshine in Malaga, and tapas in Granada, to skiing in the Sierra Nevada or discovering the beautiful coastline of Asturias, these destinations show just how much Spain has to offer beyond the summer months.
‘With fares starting from less than £30, we’re continuing to grow our UK network and making it easier for more people to discover somewhere new without spending a fortune.’
What is there to do?
Each destination offers something different, whether you’re after a beach break, a cultural escape, or an active getaway surrounded by mountains.
Málaga
Málaga is a popular choice for sunseekers, thanks to its golden beaches, waterfront restaurants and lively city centre.
Located on the Costa del Sol, it’s the perfect balance of city and sea, with a warm climate for most of the year, making it an appealing destination for a winter getaway.
Visitors can spend their days relaxing on the beach or eating tapas at one of the city’s many bars and restaurants, or for an even elevated experience, catch a view of the historic town and harbour at one of many rooftop bars.
Beyond the coast, Málaga has plenty of cultural attractions to discover, including the historic Alcazaba fortress, offering views across the city, and the Málaga Cathedral.
Art lovers can visit the Picasso Museum, dedicated to the artist who was born there.
Granada
Granada is a great option for a weekend break, particularly for travellers interested in Spanish history and architecture.
The city is home to the famous Alhambra palace complex, with general admission tickets from €22.
Visitors can also check out the historic Albaicín neighbourood, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its winding streets and whitewashed houses.
Granada is one of the few places in Spain where restaurants and bars still serve a free plate of tapas with every drink.
Asturias
Located in northern Spain, the province of Asurias is ideal for anyone looking for a holiday beyond the beach.
Visitors can start by exploring the capital city, Oviedo, wandering through its historic old town.
Once you’ve had your fill of city life, it’s easy to escape into the surrounding countryside and mountains and enjoy the scenic walking trails, such as Picos de Europa National Park.
Featuring limestome mountains and traditional stone villages, this national park is a must-visit if you’re in Asturias.
The coastline is just as appealing if you’re after a post-hike dip, with sandy beaches and pretty seaside towns, such as Cudillero.
