Israel’s military said its soldiers shot and killed two Palestinians at a checkpoint near the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank on Friday morning, during a shootout.
At least six Israeli soldiers were wounded in the exchange of fire, including at least two critically.
Two Palestinian men in their 20s had gunshot wounds to their lower limbs, one was unconscious and seriously injured, the responders said, while the Israeli troops sealed off the area.
Subsequently, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his Likud party to cancel all political events on Friday morning after the alleged attack in the occupied West Bank, the party said, days before national elections.
Likud said in a statement that "Netanyahu gave the instruction to cancel all political events planned by Likud this morning following the grave attack at the [occupied West Bank]".
Moreover, Israel's far-right national security minister called for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority in light of the incident.
"We have to act before it's too late. The Palestinian Authority must be dismantled and demilitarised, and its terror infrastructure wiped out completely," Itamar Ben-Gvir said in a statement.
There was no immediate indication of any Palestinian Authority involvement in the incident.
