Nagaland showcased its rich cultural heritage, traditional music and contemporary artistic expressions at the 12th edition of the India Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA), strengthening cultural ties between the state and Canada.
A major highlight of the Nagaland cultural delegation’s participation was the performance by the Nagaland Folkloric Group, led by Seyievinuo Chuzo, which received a standing ovation at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Vancouver on October 7. The performance was part of a special event hosted by the Consulate General of India, Vancouver.
Blending traditional Naga sounds and cultural expressions with contemporary musical elements, the group offered international audiences a glimpse into Nagaland’s diverse heritage and evolving creative traditions.
Another significant engagement was a cultural interaction with Powwow Times from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation. The exchange provided a platform for Indigenous and Naga cultural representatives to share their traditions, music, stories and experiences, highlighting the role of cultural exchanges in preserving identity, strengthening communities and fostering mutual understanding.
The delegation was also received in Edmonton at a reception hosted by the Edmonton City Council in the presence of Consul General of India, Vancouver, Masakui Rungsung and Executive Director of the India Film Festival of Alberta, Madhan Selvaraj.
The engagement offered an opportunity to strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties between Nagaland and Canada, including the wider Indian diaspora.
Adding to the significance of Nagaland’s participation, the Government of Nagaland was conferred the prestigious Golden Beaver Award at the inauguration of IFFA on October 10 in recognition of the state’s contribution to arts, culture and music.
The award was received on behalf of Nagaland chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio by chairman of the Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA), Theja Meru.
Expressing gratitude, Meru thanked Rio for his continued support and encouragement in promoting Nagaland’s music, arts and culture on the international stage. He also acknowledged the contributions of Rungsung and Selvaraj towards making the delegation’s visit successful.
Meru further congratulated the cultural contingent for its performance and for representing Nagaland with distinction, bringing pride to the state and its people.
Nagaland’s participation in the festival marked another step towards promoting the state’s cultural identity internationally and creating opportunities for local artists through cultural exchanges and creative partnerships.
The delegation’s engagements in Vancouver and Edmonton, along with the interaction with Indigenous cultural representatives and the conferment of the Golden Beaver Award, highlighted the potential of music and cultural collaboration in building lasting international relationships.
