Capcom has confirmed a major security breach involving its Capcom ID service, exposing information linked to more than 11.7 million accounts worldwide. The company says it has already taken emergency measures to stop the unauthorized access, while an investigation into the full impact of the incident remains underway.
According to Capcom, a total of 11,774,247 email addresses were leaked alongside account-related information. This includes account creation dates, last login dates, the number of logins, and the IP address used during the most recent login. A much smaller group of 43 accounts had additional information exposed, including dates of birth, gender, country or region, and nicknames.
The breach also resulted in unauthorized password changes on 196 accounts. Capcom has already reset the passwords for those accounts and says it has found no evidence that passwords originally set by customers were leaked. Credit card information was also not included in the compromised data.
According to Capcom, the company first noticed signs of unauthorized access on October 19 and began blocking the activity while investigating what had happened. An internal task force was established the following day, and the incident was reported to police and Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission on October 21.
The company is now contacting affected customers and has warned users to be careful with suspicious emails. Since millions of email addresses were exposed, attackers could potentially use the leaked information for phishing attempts pretending to come from Capcom or related companies.
