New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has spent nearly three decades around the NFL, but he is about to experience something for the first time. When the Patriots visit the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football, Vrabel will coach his first career game at Soldier Field.
As Larry Mayer pointed out on X, Vrabel is in his 27th NFL season as a player and coach and has never appeared in a game at Chicago’s iconic stadium. He did play a road game against the Bears in 2002, but Chicago was playing its home games in Champaign, Illinois, that season.
It’s a remarkable streak for someone who has spent so much time in the league. Vrabel played 14 NFL seasons before transitioning into coaching, eventually becoming one of the more respected head coaches in the sport. Yet, despite years of traveling around the league, Soldier Field has remained a stop he has never made.

That changes Thursday night as Vrabel leads New England into a matchup that could provide a welcome change of pace for Thursday Night Football. The Patriots and Bears enter the game with an opportunity to deliver one of the season’s most entertaining prime-time matchups. TNF has struggled to consistently produce compelling football this season, with several games failing to live up to expectations.
This matchup has the potential to break that trend. Both teams will be looking to make a statement, and the national audience will get a chance to see how Vrabel’s Patriots handle a challenging road environment in Chicago.
After nearly three decades in football, there are still firsts left for Vrabel to experience. Hopefully for NFL fans, this one comes with a game worth staying up for.
