One person has died and three others have been rescued after an uncompleted two-storey building collapsed at Fadeyi, along Ikorodu Road, Lagos State, in the early hours of Friday.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
Rescue operation begins
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the incident occurred at Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road.
He said LASEMA received a distress call at 12:10 am, prompting the immediate activation of its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base. The team reportedly arrived at the scene two minutes later.
The building, which was still under construction, collapsed with construction workers suspected to be trapped beneath the rubble.
Oke-Osanyintolu said emergency responders immediately commenced search and rescue operations, while safety measures were put in place to protect both victims and personnel at the scene.
Three workers rescued alive
The agency said rescuers heard groaning sounds beneath the debris, suggesting that some victims might still be alive. An excavator was subsequently deployed to support efforts to reach those trapped.
Three adult males were rescued alive and given immediate pre-hospital medical care by LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
The rescued victims were later transferred to a hospital for further medical attention, while one body was recovered from the rubble.
Search for more victims continues
LASEMA said search and rescue operations were ongoing to establish whether additional persons remained trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
Other emergency responders at the scene included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Alagbon Division.
The agency added that the cause of the collapse had not yet been established, noting that the relevant regulatory authorities would investigate the incident.
Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the rescued victims a speedy recovery.
