Ramanathapuram police have seized 1,410 kg of dry ginger and 20 kg of cardamom that were to be allegedly smuggled to Sri Lanka near Marakayar Pattinam beach close to Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district.
The Q Branch police received a tip-off that contraband goods were to be transported from Marakayar Pattinam beach to Sri Lanka. Promptly, a team led by Q Branch Inspector Jeevamani rushed to the spot early Sunday morning.
Upon spotting the Q Branch police, the smugglers abandoned 47 sacks right on the beach and fled. The sacks contained 1,410 kg of dry ginger and 20 kg of cardamom. Subsequently, the seized dry ginger, cardamom, and the country boat used for smuggling were handed over to the Customs Department.
Preliminary investigations by the Q Branch police revealed that the dry ginger and cardamom were kept to be smuggled to Sri Lanka by boat. Further, the Q Branch police and the Customs Department are trying to trace the smugglers who escaped.
