Imams should take a more active role in combating drug abuse, terrorism and social degradation while promoting morality and humanitarian values, Rajshahi-3 MP Mohammad Shafiqul Haque Milon has said.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the closing and certificate distribution ceremony of a 45-day regular imam training course for the 1,228th batch of the 2026-27 fiscal year. The programme was held at the auditorium of the Rajshahi Imam Training Academy on Monday.
Milon said that, alongside leading prayers and providing religious education, imams should contribute more actively to the welfare of society by fostering moral values, maintaining social harmony and promoting humanitarian principles.
He described imams as highly respected and trusted members of society, noting that their speeches and advice could positively influence people’s personal lives, family relationships and social behaviour.
The MP also urged imams to become self-reliant by applying the knowledge and skills acquired through professional training alongside their religious knowledge.
Referring to the government’s initiatives for religious leaders, Milon said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had taken steps to bring imams, muezzins and mosque khadims under an allowance scheme.
He expressed hope that implementing the initiatives would help enhance the professional dignity and financial security of imams and muezzins. The programme was presided over by Dr Asem Ali, deputy director of the Rajshahi Imam Training Academy.
A K M Mujahidul Islam, director of the divisional office of the Islamic Foundation; Kazi Nurul Alam, member secretary of the Nationalist Olama Party in Rajshahi; and Masud Rana, senior joint convener, attended the event as special guests.
