Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has announced an overnight shutdown of its 24-inch Sher Shah mainline in Karachi for repair work, warning that delays could lead to low gas pressure in several neighbourhoods.
According to the company, the shutdown will begin at 10 pm on Saturday, October 17, and is scheduled to end at 9 am on Sunday, October 18. If the repairs take longer than expected, gas pressure could decline in Baldia Town, Ittehad Town, Saeedabad, Naval Colony, Musharraf Colony and Mawach Goth.
Parts of Orangi Town, including Gulshan-e-Bahar, Gulshan-e-Zia, Sector 16 and Ghaziabad, may also experience reduced gas pressure. Other potentially affected areas include Altaf Nagar, Mehran City, Ramzan Goth and the SITE Industrial Area. SSGC clarified that the warning concerns a possible pressure reduction if the shutdown is extended, rather than a confirmed complete suspension of gas supply in all listed areas.
Separately, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik recently directed SSGC’s board to develop a sustainable business strategy, with a particular focus on reducing unaccounted-for gas. During a performance review in Karachi, the company’s management reported an approximately 57% reduction in gas losses by volume. The meeting was also informed that domestic consumers were receiving gas three times daily.
