Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County as well as Richmond County are under the special weather statement, which was issued on Wednesday at 3:44 p.m.
Environment Canada says there is a potential for 50 mm or more from Thursday morning to Friday afternoon.
Environement Canada says an approaching low-pressure system is expected to bring an extended period of rainfall. A moisture-laden tropical air mass may contribute to the enhanced rainfall.
“There is some uncertainty as to whether the highest rainfall amounts will fall offshore or farther inland, but the potential exists for significant totals over some locations,” reads the special weather statement.
Along with the rainfall, strong northernly winds gusting 70 to 80 kilometres per hour are possible for Friday.
Residents are encouraged to clear storm drains and gutters of leaves and other debris in advance of the rainfall.
