I recently added the Columbia Weekend Adventure II Long Shell to my jacket rotation, and I’m already expecting to get a lot of use out of it this fall and winter. Technical rain jackets can sometimes look like you’re headed straight for a hiking trail, but this one has a trench-like shape that I actually like wearing around New York City. It’s fully waterproof, breathable, and has a two-way zipper, adjustable cuffs, and a drawcord waist so I can tweak the fit depending on what I’m wearing underneath. I’ll be reaching for it on rainy commutes, especially on those days when I need real weather protection but don’t want to look like I’m dressed for an expedition.

I didn’t expect a faux-suede trench from Amazon to be one of my favorite-looking jackets in this roundup, but the Cicy Bell’s cropped length and waist belt have a sophisticated energy. I especially like the asymmetric flap detail. The faux suede is thick and soft, so it has more heft than a flimsy fast fashion jacket. I’d wear it with jeans for everyday fall outfits or a skirt when I want something a little more dressed up.

When I want to look effortlessly stylish, I throw on a trench coat. And this Tankaneo pick is the perfect jacket to pop over a basic T-shirt and jeans outfit. The oversized, extra-long cut gives it that ’90s silhouette, while the classic collar and button front keep it from feeling too trendy. It’s made from lightweight polyester material with a bit of wind protection, though it’s not the warmest coat option. I love the plaid lining that shows through the sleeves if you cuff them and adds a few extra style points. I’d throw it over jeans and sneakers or use it to dress up a simple sweater-and-trousers outfit.
Few things instantly give your outfit cool-girl vibes like a leather jacket, but they often come with a hefty price tag. If you’re looking for an inexpensive alternative to a leather jacket, try this faux leather option. It’s a little boxy and has that classic bomber silhouette, so it feels edgy without going full motorcycle chick. Plus, the slightly oversized fit means it layers well even over bulky sweaters and hoodies.

When you wear this jacket, it does most of the outfit work for you. It’s a total statement-maker, with an oversized stand collar and a cropped, boxy fit. The buttons, bell sleeves, and stitching also add to the fashion-forward feel while still being appropriate enough for an office setting or a dressy dinner. It would look super sharp with dark-wash jeans and black ankle boots.
A good fleece jacket like this one from Trendy Queen is one of my fave styles for chillier fall days. This one has the classic textured fleece on the outside, but unlike lots of other styles, it has a smoother, almost velvety feel on the inside, so it’s much more comfortable against the skin. You can wear it just about anywhere too, from around the campfire to the pumpkin patch or in chillier locales layered under a shell jacket. I love the trendier details on the fleece, from the oversized collar to the contrast line detailing. It’s perfect for wearing with leggings and a cozy slipper or boot.

This barn jacket clocks in at under $50 and checks every box for the classic style: contrasting collar, boxy fit, and cotton canvas material. It’s slightly longer than your standard barn jacket, hitting a few inches below the hips, which gives it more of a relaxed vibe. And if you’re a fan of pockets, this jacket has four of them. I love wearing a jacket like this during the fall, layered over sweaters with a pair of baggy jeans because it always gives a main-character vibe in a holiday Hallmark movie.
