‘Riding’ to death: Why older men die during sex with young girls

What is supposed to be a pleasurable moment between older men and young girls often end in death as the former often succumb to the cold hands of death while having sexual intercourse with young girls. PAUL OKAH, in this report, seeks causative factors.

It’s often a common occurrence these days to read about cases of older men dying while engaging in sexual activities with young girls in different parts of the country, mainly in hotel rooms.

Recent cases 

Last week, a 52-year-old senior lecturer at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, died shortly after having sexual intercourse with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob, in a hotel in Edo state.

Similarly, a senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Kogi State, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, died in a hotel room in Anyigba after collapsing during a sexual encounter with a 22-year-old 200-level student, Gloria Samuel.

In July, A 60-year-old man died after a sexual intercourse with a 20-year-old woman in a hotel room in Dutse, Jigawa state.

Furthermore, a man, Abiodun Akintomowo, collapsed and died shortly after having a sex romp with his girlfriend in a hotel in Ondo state.

In August, the FCT Police Command recovered the body of a man under Katampe Bridge, with the deceased said to have died after engaging in sexual activities with a married woman at the Good Samaritan Guest House in Gwarinpa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In 2025, a police officer, Insp. Lawal Ibrahim, attached to the Kwali Division, died at Palasa Guest Inn in Gwagwalada, after reportedly spending the night and having multiple rounds of sexual encounters with a woman he invited from Jigawa state. 

Similarly, an employee of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Louis Nwachukwu, was found dead in a hotel room at Mpape, after checking in with a woman named Helen Raymond, who stated that he slept off after sex and did not wake up.

Also, a 69-year-old man, Ogunleye Emmanuel, slumped and died during a sexual encounter with a lady at a hotel in Kubwa, Abuja.

Many similar cases abound in different parts of the country, with some not even making it to the media space, but raising questions of what could be the reason for older men dying during or shortly after having sexual intercourse with young girls.

Enhancement drugs

Speaking with our reporter, a medical doctor, Ezekiel Adeniran, said the use of enhancement drugs plays major roles in older men riding to death either during or after engaging in sexual activities with young girls. According to him, many men ignore their health to please young girls.

He said, “Older men dying during or shortly after sexual intercourse—often referred to medically as coital or post-coital sudden death—is driven primarily by underlying cardiovascular stress combined with physical exertion. Most cases involve older men who already suffer from silent or diagnosed conditions like coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis (narrowed or hardened arteries) or left ventricular hypertrophy (thickened heart muscle).

“As a result, the physical exertion and emotional/catecholaminergic surge of sexual activity increase heart rate and blood pressure. In a compromised heart, this extra workload can trigger a fatal arrhythmia (irregular heart rhythm) or an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). A sudden, severe tear in the inner layer of the aorta (the body’s main artery) can rupture under the sudden spike in blood pressure during climax, leading to rapid internal bleeding and cardiac tamponade.

“The use of unregulated aphrodisiacs and enhancers also contribute to fatalities in older men during or after sexual activities. This is why public health authorities frequently warn against the heavy, unprescribed use of local and synthetic sex-enhancement drugs, herbal mixtures and counterfeit stimulants. Many of these products contain hidden, high-dose active pharmaceutical ingredients or unverified chemicals that severely spike blood pressure or interact dangerously with undiagnosed heart conditions.”

Continuing, he said, “Also, the use of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (such as sildenafil/Viagra) or street-level stimulants combined with alcohol or nitrate-containing medications can cause a dangerous, life-threatening drop or erratic spike in blood pressure. The spike will then become fatal during or after sex romp, hence the numerous reported cases of older men dying in hotel rooms as a result of sexual activities.

“Moreover, sexual events occurring outside of regular routines (such as encounters with new partners or in high-stress/unfamiliar environments like motels) carry a statistically higher association with acute cardiovascular events due to heightened adrenaline and anxiety. “The man would just want to quickly have sex in the given opportunity and then rush home to his wife or family. Oftentimes, death occurs because of the aforementioned factors.”

On her part, a social commentator, Mrs. Anita Ndukwe, advised men to stay faithful in their marriages, saying it’s as a result of cheating and in a bid to satisfy young girls that older men to die during sex.

She said, “As I am talking to you, one old man somewhere is busy setting up a date with a young girl, with sex in mind; ignorant of the fact that he may just be booking a ride that will lead to his untimely death. It happens frequently, but men hardly learn. They just want to deceive themselves that they can satisfy or please women, whereas the genders are wired differently when it comes to sexual activities.

“During sex, the heart rate and breathing speed up, blood pressure rises and blood vessels dilate to send extra blood to the genitals, causing an erection. All previous physical changes in men intensify. Muscle tension increases, the testicles elevate. Orgasm is marked by involuntary, rhythmic muscle contractions in the penis, along with peak heart rate, blood pressure and fast breathing. In older men, fatalities occur either during or after the aforementioned sexual activities.

“Indeed, older men bring death to themselves by trying to please young girls, which is difficult, if not impossible. Imagine a man in his 60s, 70s or even 80s and with underlying age-related ailments exhausting himself by trying different sex styles with a girl in her 20s or 30s. This type of girl (the Gen-Z baddie, as they call themselves, but homewreckers to me) will be rubbing the head of the man old enough to be her grandfather and telling him to go harder on her. The age gap is too much and there’s never any way on earth an old man can match the energy of a young girl when it comes to sexual activities.”

‘Age not always the cause of death’

In an interview with Blueprint Weekend, a public health practitioner, Joseph Elem, said underlying health issues are majorly the reasons older men die during or after sexual activities, regardless of the age of the partner. 

He said, “Older men can die while having sex, but the partner’s age is not a medical determinant of whether cardiac or physical strain leads to a fatal event. Sudden death during or immediately after sexual activity is rare – accounting for roughly 0.2% to 0.6% of sudden deaths – and is predominantly driven by underlying cardiovascular issues such as a heart attack (myocardial infarction) triggered by the physical exertion and increased heart during sex.

“In fact, forensic studies show that sudden cardiac deaths during sex in older cohorts typically average around 59 years of age. Risks can be elevated in older or infirm men due to pre-existing heart disease, physical strain or the use of certain medications (such as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors like sildenafil) or recreational substances (such as cocaine).

“So, sudden death during sexual activity in older men is primarily caused by acute cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or sudden cardiac arrest, rather than the age of the partner. It’s important to establish this fact because the partner or lover can be either old or young, but the result will be the same for the older man.

“Also, the use of erectile dysfunction drugs (such as sildenafil and tadalafil), combined with the physical exertion of intercourse or recreational stimulants (like cocaine, methamphetamine, caffeine mixed with energy drinks), can cause sharp drops or spikes in blood pressure and place severe stress on the cardiovascular system during sex, thereby leading to death.

“In a nutshell, the age of the partner is not a direct medical cause of death. However, age-disparate or extramarital encounters often correlate with specific behavioural dynamics – such as increased emotional or physical stress, attempts to perform at a higher intensity, or the use of performance-enhancing drugs – that elevate cardiovascular risk in an already vulnerable older individual.”
