Kimberly Guilfoyle’s controversial departure from her role as US ambassador to Greece has taken a new turn, with reports alleging that a bitter personal dispute within Donald Trump Jr.’s inner circle influenced her diplomatic appointment to Athens.
An investigation by Greek newspaper Kathimerini reportedly examined claims that Guilfoyle’s relationship with her former fiancé, Donald Trump Jr., deteriorated after messages allegedly sent about his partner, Bettina Anderson, triggered tensions within the Trump family.
According to sources cited in the reporting, the fallout contributed to a decision to move Guilfoyle thousands of miles away from the president’s family by appointing her to a diplomatic post in Greece.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the precise circumstances behind her appointment remain unclear.
Alleged messages fuel claims of a family feud
Guilfoyle, 57, was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr. before their relationship ended and he became involved with Anderson, 39.
The report alleges that private messages contained unflattering remarks about Anderson and her relationship with Trump Jr. It also refers to alleged exchanges between Guilfoyle and Trump donor Eric Deters concerning the president’s eldest son’s partner.
The exact messages have not been made public in full, and the claims remain allegations.
According to the reports, Guilfoyle also allegedly suggested that Anderson had supplied bikini photographs to the Daily Mail. The claims have added another layer to the dispute surrounding Guilfoyle’s personal relationships and her standing within Trump’s political circle.
Sources cited in the investigation suggested that her appointment to Greece was intended, in part, to create distance between her and the president’s family. That interpretation has not been confirmed by the White House.
Financial misconduct allegations add to the controversy
The latest reporting follows separate allegations involving Guilfoyle and Deters, a Trump supporter and donor.
According to reports cited by The New York Times, Deters alleged that Guilfoyle sought $100,000 to help cover her American Express credit card debt ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing in 2025.
The allegations also concern communications in which Guilfoyle reportedly asked Deters to arrange the money. Deters has claimed that their relationship later involved discussions about assistance with tax and legal matters and access to senior Trump administration officials.
Guilfoyle’s lawyer has challenged the authenticity of the correspondence and disputed Deters’ allegations, maintaining that she did nothing wrong.
Deters has threatened to sue Guilfoyle for defamation and said he intends to subpoena Trump Jr. as part of a potential legal dispute. Any such claims would need to be tested through the legal process.
Guilfoyle’s departure leaves questions over US relations with Greece
Guilfoyle took up her role in Athens in November 2025, placing her at the centre of US-Greek relations during a period of defence cooperation and military modernisation.
Her appointment initially attracted attention because of her longstanding connections to Trump and the administration.
Following her departure, experienced diplomat Josh Huck, the deputy chief of mission, assumed responsibility for the embassy.
Greek officials have largely treated the matter as an internal US issue. Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis has said relations between Greece and the United States remain at a high point, while opposition figures have criticised the limited public response to the controversy.
The developments have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Guilfoyle’s appointment and departure. However, claims that her posting was designed as punishment for a personal dispute remain unverified.
For Greece, the priority remains maintaining its strategic relationship with Washington, particularly as the two countries deepen cooperation on defence, energy and regional security.
