The New York Giants and Washington Commanders both had golden opportunities to win Sunday's Week 5 matchup.
New York made its way deep into Washington territory after forcing a punt from the Commanders. Instead of attempting a game-winning field goal, the Giants tried to fight for some extra yardage with running back Cam Skattebo — who coughed up a costly fumble.
The Commanders then worked their way into field-goal range. But instead of spiking the ball or throwing it out of bounds, quarterback Jayden Daniels made an ill-advised scramble with no timeouts remaining.
The game ended in a 27-27 tie, with neither team happy about the result.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter believes there will eventually be "consequences" for this ugly end of the game.
"We don't know when it will be, but I would imagine in time there’s going to be consequences from this game," Schefter said on "Get Up."
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn took responsibility for this botched final play when speaking to reporters postgame.
“The sequencing of that does not fall on [Daniels],” Quinn said. “It's an outside throw or a clock — an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot. I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don't need to gain more yards.”

The Commanders will look to get their season back on track in a primetime "Monday Night Football" matchup against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.
