Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have all produced remarkable winning runs in the Premier League, but few have matched the consistency required to put together a long sequence of consecutive victories.
From Liverpool’s dominant title-winning campaign in 2019-20 to Manchester City’s record-breaking 100-point season, these streaks have helped define some of the most memorable periods in English football.
Here is a look at the longest winning streaks highlighted in Premier League history, the teams behind them and how their runs shaped their seasons according to Planet Football on Sunday.
Manchester United – 12 wins (2000)
Manchester United’s 12-game winning streak at the turn of the century remains one of the earliest notable runs on the list.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United were already top of the table when the sequence began. However, their advantage over second place grew from four points to 18 by the end of the run, underlining their dominance.
The winning streak continued into the following season before United were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
The run reflected Ferguson’s side’s ability to maintain consistency across a demanding league campaign and establish a commanding position in the title race.
Manchester City – 12 wins (2021-22)
Manchester City recorded their 12-match winning streak during the 2021-22 Premier League season as Pep Guardiola’s side battled Liverpool for the title.
The run began in November 2021 with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United and ended in January 2022 when Southampton held City to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s Stadium.
City’s consistency proved decisive in one of the closest title races in Premier League history. They finished the season with 93 points, just one ahead of Liverpool, who pushed them until the final day.
The sequence demonstrated how a sustained period of winning can make the difference in a title race where even a single dropped point can prove costly.
Chelsea – 13 wins (2016-17)
Chelsea’s 13-match winning streak during the 2016-17 campaign was a defining feature of Antonio Conte’s first season in English football.
After suffering a 3-0 defeat away to Arsenal in September 2016, Conte switched to a three-at-the-back formation, a tactical adjustment that transformed Chelsea’s fortunes.
The Blues responded with 13 consecutive league victories, climbing from eighth place to the top of the table.
Their run ended with a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in January 2017. Despite that setback, Chelsea had established a five-point lead at the summit.
Conte’s tactical change helped turn Chelsea into one of the most formidable teams in the country, and they went on to win the Premier League title with 93 points.
Manchester City – 13 wins (2024)
Manchester City produced another impressive winning streak in 2024, recording 13 consecutive Premier League victories between the end of the 2023-24 campaign and the beginning of the following season.
The run started with eight successive wins as Guardiola’s side closed out the 2023-24 season by securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
City carried that momentum into the new campaign, winning their opening four league matches before the sequence was eventually brought to an end.
Although the streak highlighted their ability to carry winning form across seasons, subsequent struggles affected their title defence, and City eventually finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League table.
Arsenal – 14 wins (2002)
Arsenal hold a special place in Premier League history with their 14-match winning streak, which began towards the end of the 2001-02 season and continued into the following campaign.
Under Arsène Wenger, the Gunners had already secured the 2001-02 Premier League title and carried their momentum into the new season.
Although a draw against West Ham United in August interrupted their perfect start to the campaign, Arsenal’s performances continued to inspire confidence that they could mount another serious title challenge.
That belief would ultimately be vindicated in the 2003-04 season, when Arsenal completed the entire Premier League campaign unbeaten, earning the legendary nickname ‘The Invincibles’.
Their 14-game winning run was another demonstration of the quality and consistency that defined Wenger’s most successful Arsenal sides.
Manchester City – 15 wins (2019)
Manchester City produced another remarkable winning sequence in their pursuit of the 2018-19 Premier League title.
With Liverpool setting an extraordinary pace in the title race, Guardiola’s side responded by winning their final 14 league matches of the season before carrying their form into the opening game of the following campaign.
City finished the 2018-19 season with 98 points, just one ahead of Liverpool, who had accumulated 97 points despite losing only once throughout the campaign.
Their ability to maintain their winning momentum under intense pressure proved decisive, as City became the first team to retain the Premier League title since Manchester United in 2009.
The run underlined the extraordinary standards required to win the Premier League when competing against another side enjoying a historic season.
Liverpool – 17 wins (2019)
Liverpool’s 17-match winning streak spanned the end of the 2018-19 season and the beginning of the 2019-20 campaign.
Jurgen Klopp’s team had narrowly missed out on the title in 2018-19, finishing with 97 points, one behind Manchester City. Determined to go one better, Liverpool won their final nine league matches of that season, scoring at least twice in every game.
Their form continued into the following campaign, with Liverpool winning their first eight Premier League matches before a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford ended the sequence.
Although the draw interrupted their winning run, it did little to slow their progress. Liverpool went on to dominate the 2019-20 campaign, eventually ending their 30-year wait for a league title.
Klopp’s side combined attacking intensity with defensive organisation and consistency, establishing themselves as one of the strongest teams in the club’s history.
Liverpool – 18 wins (2019-20)
Liverpool went one step further by producing an 18-match winning streak during their historic 2019-20 title-winning campaign.
Already top of the table when the sequence began, Klopp’s side extended their advantage to 19 points by the time the run ended, putting themselves in an almost unassailable position.
Liverpool ultimately won the Premier League with seven matches remaining, setting a new record for the earliest title triumph by games remaining at the time.
Their extraordinary campaign also saw them win 35 of their previous 36 league matches, a level of consistency that left their rivals struggling to keep pace.
The season was particularly significant for Liverpool supporters, as it delivered the club’s first Premier League title and ended a three-decade wait to be crowned English champions.
Manchester City – 18 wins (2017)
Manchester City matched Liverpool’s 18-match winning streak during the 2017-18 season, when Guardiola’s team established themselves as one of the most dominant sides the Premier League had seen.
After drawing 1-1 at home against Everton in their second league match of the campaign, City embarked on an extraordinary run of victories.
Their performances were not only consistent but often emphatic. Liverpool and Crystal Palace were both beaten 5-0, Watford suffered a 6-0 defeat, and Stoke City were thrashed 7-2.
The sequence ended with a goalless draw away to Crystal Palace, but City’s dominance continued throughout the season.
They finished with 100 points, becoming the first team to reach that total in a Premier League campaign. City also scored 106 goals and finished 19 points ahead of Manchester United.
The campaign remains one of the defining achievements of Guardiola’s managerial career and set a new benchmark for success in English football.
