By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 19-year-old Ladyville resident has been charged with aggravated burglary following a violent home invasion in Burrell Boom Village during which four armed intruders allegedly tied up a businessman and escaped with nearly $90,000 in cash and valuables, including his SUV.
Adam Abraham Reynolds, a labourer of Vista Del Mar, Ladyville, appeared before a Belize City magistrate on Tuesday, October 20, where he was arraigned on a single count of aggravated burglary in connection with the October 14 attack on a 53-year-old businessman at El Chiclero Resort.
According to police reports, the man was asleep inside his condominium around 4:50 a.m. when he was awakened by loud noises. An intruder allegedly jumped onto his bed and pressed a pillow against his face. As he struggled, a second man entered and struck him with an object resembling a firearm, causing an injury to his face.
The businessman was then restrained with duct tape around his hands, feet and mouth while three intruders ransacked his residence. The men allegedly escaped with $30,000 in cash, two gold chains valued at $12,000, two cellphones, a television, a surveillance system and a burgundy 2017 Toyota Rush valued at $45,000. The total value of the stolen property was reported at $89,900.
Police subsequently located the stolen SUV in Santa Familia Village, Cayo District, on October 15. Investigators allege that Reynolds was inside the vehicle when officers approached, but sped away before crashing and abandoning it.
Usher later positively identified the recovered vehicle as his property.
During an October 16 police briefing, Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith confirmed that two persons of interest had been detained and that investigators were seeking another individual in connection with the burglary.
Reynolds reportedly surrendered to police on Monday, October 19, in the presence of an attorney. During Tuesday’s court appearance, he requested additional time for his attorney to arrive, but the arraignment proceeded after approximately two hours without counsel.
The charge remains an allegation, and Reynolds has not been convicted. Investigations into the involvement of the other alleged intruders continue.
